Goggles are in!

I was at lunch with a friend of mine today and saw two adorable dogs wearing goggles. The second pup is Ovie, one of most handsome English Bulldogs I've seen in a while and he was a complete pleasure to meet.

New Family Members

Two more pups have join my extended family:

Hi, my name is Miley:

Miley might just be a little bit of everything, but one thing she can claim for sure and that she is a snuggler. She loves to cuddle on the couch and can't wait till she gets to go on her next walk. Miss Miley is a treat to be walking and has been told she looks like her dad.

Hi, my name is Sir Elton:

This Yorkie is camera shy, but that is not a good representation of his personality! He is an energetic pup with lots of love to give. He will circle a room five times before you even can get off the couch, but he is more charismatic then the piano man himself.

Watching Puck 3-25-2010

Just a couple kisses for Puck's mommy and daddy...

I think Puck was a little excited after being in the crate so long to get out. He played almost the entire three hours I was there. He was a good boy, although he couldn't hold it for the whole time before I got there. I had "Up" on in the background and Wilbur and Oscar were enthralled with the talking dogs. I left at 6:15 after a short conversation with the new neighbor who was interested in setting up a play date for her puppy. I told her next time she saw Puck and his mom to see if they wanted to set something up when he was past the 18 week mark.

Meal time etiquette for your pets

Personally, when we are all gathering around for meal time, I like to give my dog his own dinner. I always looked at it as a way to include him in our meal times without having him beg at my lap for a few scraps off my plate. Here are some tips from the ASPCA on changing meal time behavior. See if anything works for you, but remember be patient: change takes time.

While I'm on the subject of food, humans are watching their diets and trying to eat balanced, nutritious meals. It only makes sense that we would want the same for our dogs too, but please make sure you discuss any diet changes with your vet. Here is a list of
human foods that are safe for your pets and AskVetAdvice.com's recommendations on healthy pet foods.

Watching Puck 3-23-2010

It looks like I've got a hyper puppy on my hands!

Puck tried to groom Wilbur today, but Wilbs wasn't to fond of Puck licking his toes. Strange Wilbur, but aren't you the one who like to lick obsessively?

Watching Puck 3-22-2010

Spring rain is always wonderful, well that is until you are pet sitting for a couple of frenchies that aren't thrilled with taking walks in the rain! Thankfully it stopped raining only 45 mins after I arrived at the house so that all of us got a chance to go outside, and all of the boys needed to go! As Puck's mommy told me, he and his older brother Oscar have been getting along better and i got to see it. There was a moment that Puck and Oscar were playing with their bones right next to each other AND they were actually touching. I've got to say Wilbur has been my favorite today, he has been extremely loving and has barely left my lap since I got to the house.
I ended up staying with the boys till 9 because Oscar and Puck were actually snuggling on the couch. That was until something caused everyone to wake up and start barking. Puck and I went out one last time and I let him run around or a little before I put him back into his crate to wait for his mommy.

"Pets and Pesticides: Let’s Be Careful Out There"

The news article "Pets and Pesticides: Let’s Be Careful Out There" talks about on the spot flea and tick products. As you might already know, there have been some reports that some flea and tick products have cause illness and even death to some pets. The article goes a little deeper into these reports and there is also a search engine on the site that allows you to search products that you might have used on your pet. Just a warning though, there is a pretty sad picture of a a mini dachshund and the chemical burns from a treatment.

Watching Puck 3-16-2010

There was no post on Puck, Oscar, and Wilbur the other day since I spent most of the time on the phone with their owner because of a little squabble btwn Oscar and his new little brother. Everything was fine but it seems that older dogs aren't always thrilled with the arrival of a new little brother. I asked around and actually got a response from Cesar Millan (or one of his disciples) saying stay calm and assertive and directing me to these two articles: Introducing Puppy to Older Dogs and Puppy Annoying Old Dog with Play Behavior

Since I didn't do an update I though I would just add a couple of pics from the day :) enjoy!

Walking Milo 3-15-2010

He has a lot of spunk and a big bark for such a little guy. We went out around 2:30pm today for a quick walk through the neighborhood. He was happy to be outside despite the clouds and overall dampness today. We stopped by to visit the two Bernese Mountain Dogs up the road and played a little with them, which really meant Milo barked while to two of them ran around together. Now its off to get some food and water, and probably a nap.

Older Dog Care

So lately Buttons has been showing his age. He acts a little slow when we are out on walks, he has little spats with other dogs, and he has full out shakes when there is a thunderstorm outside. I found this article, Senior Dogs: Common Behavior Changes, helpful in helping me to understand the changes going on with my aging dog. It also proved useful with suggestions on how to "treat" these behavior changes.

On a sad note, I just saw on twitter that Buddy is set to be euthanized on Wednesday, March 17. Buddy, like my dog, is a Labrador/Newfoundland mix. My heart goes out to him and I hope that they will find what could be Buttons' brother a home.

Dog eats $20,000 Diamond!

Thankfully this ins't one of my dogs!!

ASPCA's Dog Walking 101

Have a quick read: Dog Walking 101. The ASPCA gives some helpful guidelines and hints to walking your dog. Plus there are some good links to other dog walking training ideas and some suggestions on walking equipment!

Since warmer weather is coming, here is a warning about bug spray:
"Walking in humid, mosquito-friendly areas? Spray yourself, not your pooch! Even though it’s tempting to share insect repellent with your pooch, it can be a grave mistake. Insect repellent should never be applied to dogs, who can suffer neurological problems from the toxic ingredient, DEET. Instead, ask your veterinarian for a suitable, pet-specific alternative."

Speaking of toxins, iPhone users make sure you check out ASPCA's new app! Pet Safe supplies names, descriptions, and pictures of plants that can be toxic to your pets. It also gives you a direct link to call the ASPCA's poison control!

Watching Puck 3-13-2010

Today was a day of sleeping, maybe it was the rain, maybe he is just being a puppy.
The boys were happy to see me today, but no one was in the mood to go out into the rain. When Puck was outside he spent most of the time sitting on the deck shivering, so our trips outside were short. After a quick play session with a squeaky toy, Puck was out for the count. Oscar and Wilbur took the puppy's nap time to their advantage and had some fun chasing each other around the room. They must have been trying to get out all that extra energy. After the older boys settled down, Puck woke up to eat and finished off his bowl of puppy food and attempted to eat the rest of the adult food. We took a quick walk around the deck and luckily the rain had stopped so he could take care of his business. Then it was right back to sleep for him, and the rest followed suit. No accidents in the house! Good boy this one.

A beginning

Every company needs it's start. Mine came when my friend and her husband decided to add a third Frenchie into their family. A brand new puppy is a wonderful addition to any family, but it can also be a hard adjustment to work schedules, social lives and daily appointments. That's where I came in. As a graduate student, I had a flexible schedule and plenty of time on my hands to help with their brand new family member.

This blog is meant for the live update on the dogs I am watching. It will provide antidotes for everyone and information so the pet owners can see what their dogs have been up to.

Introductions:
Our immediate family:
Me: I am a 29 year old female located in Potomac, Maryland. I am working on a Master's in Clinical Counseling at Johns Hopkins University. I've always had pets in my life and would never have it any other way. Currently my family includes Buttons and Isis, but I have a feeling it might be growing soon.

Hi, my name is Buttons:
Buttons is my soon to be 11 year old black Lab/Newfoundland mix who still has the ability to look like a puppy. He has been a part of my family since October of 1999. He spends most of his days sleeping at my feet and still loves chasing squirrels. He is fun loving and if he could talk he would sound like the dog from Up. "Squirrel!"

Hi, my name is Isis:
Isis is my blue eyed Chocolate Point Himalayan. She enjoys climbing into drawers and curling up next to heating vents. She is a loving cat, but as with most cats, only on her terms.

Our extended family:

Hi, my name is Milo:
Milo is a Pekinese that was found on a rainy Christmas Eve Day abandoned and cold in a gas station parking lot. He has warmed the heart of a his new family.

Hi my name is Wilbur:
Wilbur is a handsome Frenchie who loves giving kisses and snuggling. He enjoys belly rubs and lets his newest baby brother climb all over him.

Hi my name is Oscar:
This Frenchie is a hyper little guy. He loves his older brother, but he is still learning how to be a big brother. This surprising little dog purrs like a cat sometimes and sounds more like a bullfrog then a bulldog!

Hi, my name is Puck:
Puck is the newest edition. He is a Pied French Bulldog with the most wonderful temperament. His bright blue eyes will melt your heart and you just can't say no to him. He love chewing on everything and is still working on potty training.
